Topic: A Bonus in the Box!

For all those keeping track: I am now a proud grandma of the cutest little baby boy in the history of forever! His name is Gavin and he's got strawberry blond hair and muddy blue-grey murky newborn eyes. He sleeps a lot and poops even more.  He's mostly typical for a newborn baby -aside from the fact he's my grandson which makes him a thousand times specialer than all other newborns who are not my grandson.

And here's what gradma squirrel looks like.  Only I don't need a walker. And I don't have pearls.  But I do have a pair of furry moccasins.

Merry Christmas in the LitterBox!! A special gift has been dropped in the box!

Topic: A Bonus in the Box!

By popular demand! At least one person -times several -have asked about this so I'm scanning it and posting it here.  It's the Squirrel Teapot holder.

It's from a very old Paton's knitting book called "Beehive Toys and Novelties" There's no copyright date however the dolls have a late depression-era look about them. I think it's from the 1940's to the mid 50's at the latest.

Being so old there are a couple issues with the patterns, not so much the instructions but in the materials listed.  First: the needle sizes are old and out of date.  They don't correspond with modern sizes at all.  I used 2.5mm needles for both the outside and the lining.  Second: patonized wool with nylon hasn't been available for decades.  The gauge of the yarn compares with modern sock yarns.  I made mu with Koivu sock yarn and it turned out very close to the original measurements -close enough that the slight fraction of a difference doesn't bother me. And it shouldn't bother anyone else! Third and lastly: the pattern calls for kapok as a stuffing material.  I haven't see kapok in at least 25 years.  There are a couple specialty places on line selling it but don't waste your time or money.  Regular polyester fiberfill works just as well and it's non-allergenic -kapok was highly allergenic.

Additionally I didn't follow the directions on one detail: the pattern book says to make the lining piece identical to the outside only in a different color.  I used the same color yarn but did it in stockinette stitch rather than garter stitch. I find the contrast in textures aesthetically pleasing -it looks good to me!

So below is a thumbnail of the pattern page in the book.  Click on the thumbnail and the full size page in jpg format will open in a new tab.

And for all those who love squirrels check out my blog about squirrels who have made their way into the news: News Of The Squirreled.  And that's my special Christmas present for squirrel lovers and knitters out there.

Dave!! An Entry Just for YOU!!!
Topic: A Bonus in the Box!

This entry is for you!  Here's a link to Ifranview.  This little freebie is perfect not only for viewing pictures in a host of obscure formats, but it allows you to convert the files into formats that are far less obscure, such as jpg, gif and tiff.   Here's the official site:  and you can download it at Cnet: or you can get it from tucows:  Tucows is supposed to be faster.  There are also plug in available, but the meat of the program is in the basic download.   It now allows some drawing, painting and color palette, but thats' not the real purpose of this program.  It won't replace photoshop, but why use a meat cleaver when all you need is a butter knife? It can "save as" tiff, gif, jpg. ICO (icon) and png without any other plug-ins needed.

Also, if your file is in EPS format you might need something called "ghostscript" to help read the postscript format. It's similar to PDF, same company, and a bear to convert. Here's ghostscript on Sourceforge:  and here's the programs website:  and again, this is free and open-source.

So I hope this helps you at work with your file format issues.  If you want i can download some of these here at home and you can send me the problem graphics and I can try to fix them here.

See you after work.  We need dry cat food, BTW.  Later!

SPEAKING of Sandman and my kids and their odd crush on Death...

and Gaiman's blog

What everyone has been waiting for...Death comes to the big screen. There are few comic books that qualify as literature, and all of them have been penned by Neil Gaiman.  Preludes and Nocturnes, even though it's rough around the edges, is a masterpiece that transcends its medium.

So I think I did this correctly this time.  Come and visit my new subdomain. Linda's Sewing Room  it's all freshly painted and decorated and looks nice and pretty.  There will be more things soon.  Right now I'm taking all the skirt to shirt recon stuff and putting it on a page.  That should be cool.

As I've said, my next mnachine is a 20U75.  No questions about it.  Until this morning, when what should appear in my inbox but a "new product" notification from the delightfully good people of JUKI.  I've said the 20U...but what I really mean is the JUKILZ2290 latest model which now can be prgrammed to automatically sew welt pockets in one step automatically switching from straight to zigzag where needed!  Does it get any better?

The specs from Juki's site.  Clicky these pretty coloured letters! THIS is a real dream machine.

That's all for now! And likely my next machine will still be the 20U75.

It's been several weeks since we've watched CSI:Horatio Caine Super Cop and His Sunglasses of Justice! Warren Ellis calls him Carusobot, another name that seems to be catching on.  It's now considered one of television's best/worst-it's-so-bad-it's-good shows.  Every episode begins the same way...and here's a You Tube collection of Horatio Caine's best opening one liners.  Is it me, or do his sunglasses show more emotion then him?  Somone strung together the very best/worst of all his opening scene one liners and they are just totally hilarious and cheesy when put together in one segment.  One get to hear Roger Daltrey scream over and over and over and over!

And for 18$ you too can have your own Sunglasses of Justice!

Master Shake won the costume contest!  Yay!  I guess all the crap was worth it!  However, he lost the straw and he had trouble navigating stairs, which isn't surprising.  But he won the costume contest!  Cool!
